Top 10 Ways to Relax and Relieve Stress When You're Short on Time

Football season and school are both upon me, leaving me with MAYBE a total of 1 hour of time to relax in any given day, and I'm constantly finding new ways to allow myself to unwind.

10. A 20 minute nap. Anyone whose read any of my posts before knows my affinity for napping. A quick 20 minute lie-down leaves me feeling fresh and peaceful.

9. A quick walk. Near my school there are a couple very nice parks just close enough for me to get to when I only have ~30 minutes to spare. Going there and getting away from the hustle a bustle of school has a has a very serene quality to it.

8. Putting your feet up. It probably sounds crazy, but if I'm sitting somewhere and I prop my feet up in front of me, I feel instantly more relaxed, no matter how stressful the math I'm doing is!

7. Get away from people. You'll probably notice a recurring theme in this list that many of the tips involve finding some alone time. Even if it's people you love, many people find being constantly surrounded by people to be taxing.

6. Daydream Similar to number 10, but without the sleep. Just sitting and closing your eyes, letting your thoughts wander wherever they so choose. A word of advice on this though, try to do it in a calm setting, lest your daydreams be filled with stress.

5. Find someone to listen. Contrary to everything I've said about being alone, if there's someone you know will listen while you unload some of your problems (even if its just a blog or a message board online) that can be very revitalizing. Getting your problems out of your head and into words can make them appear simpler and more manageable, and having someone for moral support is always nice.

4. Listen to soothing music. My unwinding music of choice lately has been Adele, but whatever you find calms you down, put it on.

3. Exercise. I feel like I've put this in another list for something too, but I don't think I can overstate the great feeling you have when the endorphins start flowing after a workout.

2. Write down all of your problems when you have some free time. This frees up space in your mind for other things. When all of your stresses and problems are in your head, thats where you keep them, and they stay with you. If you write them down, you can compartmentalize and leave them on the piece of paper to leave you free to relax for a bit.

1. Have a cup of tea. Any warm drink really, my hot drink of choice (aside from coffee, which I don't use to relax because it does the opposite :p) is peppermint tea. The steam, heat, and general warm fuzzy feeling it gives me allows me to feel really calm and relaxed for the duration of the cup, even if its only for 5 minutes in the middle of a stressful hour.
